NooneFamily's Movie Reviews
Our Star System:
- 5/5 - Loved it
- 4/5 - Really liked it
- 3/5 - Liked it
- 2/5 - Didn't really like it
- 1/5 - Hated it
I know, I know we aren't seeing movies opening night anymore. Bear with us, we have a baby now! ;)
Mean Creek - 4 stars
Walk The Line - 4 stars
Audition - 3 Stars
Aristocrats - 3 stars
Dark Water - 2 stars
The Island - 3 stars
War of Worlds - 3 stars
Hostel - 4 stars
I really liked Hostel! As my friend Patrick put it, "Great mix of gore and hollywood". I have a soft spot for this genre and Hostel didn't disappoint. It had some really disturbing scenes, made me cringe, and at the same time I was fascinated by the storyline. It wasn't really gore for gore sake, there was a story line in there and you had a hero to root for. Overall great movie!
Hide and Seek - 3 stars
This was one of those movies that proves my expectation theory. I was told Hide and Seek wasn't good, don't bother seeing it. So I had really low expectations of film. Well, I was pleasantly surprised, it wasn't the best movie I've seen but it had a air of mystery and kept my interest.
Flight of the Phoenix - 3 stars
We watched this movie with no expectations and therefore enjoyed it. Flight of the Phoenix is not particular good, not bad, just a time killer on a friday night. Something we could have waited to see on TV.
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy - 2 stars
I was amused while watching Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and a few scenes had me laugh out loud but overall it was a little too weird and disjointed.
Crash - 5 stars
Awesome movie! I love a movie with multiple plotlines all intertwined. Crash is one of those movies I would like to make required for all kids to see before they leave high school, similar to American History X but not hitting quite as hard.
Batman Begins - 4 stars
Batman Begins is one of the better comic book movies. I thought it had some problems in the beginning but overall I was entertained and that's what you want from a super hero movie. It was dark but not too dark and I like that Gotham looked more like a realistic city then in previous Batman movies.
Oh! and I loved Christian Bale as Batman, he is one of my favorite actors. It also stared Cillian Murphy another favorite of mine.
Frailty - 3 stars
Frailty was a good movie. It had me intrigued and I was a little surprised by the ending, although I did figure part of it out. There is something about it I really liked, yet I thought it was missing something. I can't really put my finger on it. But I would recommend it for those are looking for something to watch on a Friday night.
Donnie Darko - 4 stars
I finally got to see this movie. I've been hearing such good things about for so long. Well, it lived up to it's reputation. Even Billy liked it! I'm posting two links, one to IMDB for the description of the movie and then the other to the actual Donnie Darko site. Why? Well. the movie site is actually an extension of the movie. Another reason I love this flick, multi-media movie experiences are COOL!
Yes, I know I'm a geek.
Elizabethtown - 1 star
WOW, I don't even know what to say. I've never been more bored in a theater in my life. Elizabethtown was a huge disappointment.
Hostage - 2 stars
We rented Hostage in hopes of a good action flick. Well, in stead, we got a far fetched, dissapointing, boring, disjointed movie.
In Her Shoes - 4 stars
I saw In Her Shoes with the baby during the Reel Moms showing. I really like it, made me wish I had a sister.
Red Eye - 4 stars
Red Eye lets a girl kick butt! Gotta love that.
Transporter 2 - 3 stars
Nothing like cheesy action packed fun. I'm not so sure if we like Transporter 2 because it was good or we just like Jason Statham because he's so cool!
Hitch - 3 stars
Hitch was not as good as we thought it would be, but still entertaining.
Million Dollar Baby - 3 stars vs 4 stars
We already knew the end so it was sorts of unfair. Bill gave Million Dollar Baby the lower rating, he thought the end ruined the movie. I really liked it anyway.
The Skeleton Key - 4 stars
Ryan and I went to see The Skeleton Key at Reel Moms and I really liked it! Not as scary as I thought but the end surprised me.
Must Love Dogs - 2 stars
Let me pre curser this with, I love John Cusack and romantic comedies, but Must Love Dogs fell short. It was cute and had some funny moments, but it got more and more boring as the movie went on.
Fantastic 4 - 2 stars
Billy called Fantastic 4 a typical hollywood comic book movie. To be honest here, I fell asleep after the first 20 min. In the movies defense, It was 1am at the drive-ins and I have a 6 week old baby, seriously I don't think the best movie in the world could have kept me awake!
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - 2 stars vs. 3 stars
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is yet another movie Billy and I didn't agree on. I liked it and thought it was entertaining and fun. Billy, on the other hand, couldn't stop comparing it to the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, so of course he didn't like it as much. If you ask me I think Willy Wonka was better but Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was good in it's own right.
Napoleon Dynamite - 2 stars
Napoleon Dynamite is a strange and oddly interesting movie. I can almost see why it's been so popular but I still can't say I liked it. It's one of those movies you find yourself looking at one and another saying, "What?" Bill and I figure it must be the movie to watch when your high. You'll have to see it for yourself.
The Aviator - 3 stars
Another movie based on a true story, The Aviator is based on the life of Howard Hughes, the eccentric millionaire I knew little about. The movie was good but slow at parts. Sometimes I found myself engrossed and other times uninterested. Overall I liked it probably because I found Hughes utterly fascinating not because the movie was that great.
Beyond the Sea - 1 star vs 2 stars
I had high hopes for Beyond the Sea, I love Bobby Darin's music and always found his life fascinating. However, the movie fell short for me. I guess I was looking for a more straight forward biography type of film, like Ray, where I would learn more about the artist and his life. What I got was this artsy musical type movie that seemed out of whack. The middle of the movie got a little better but then it ended the same way it started. Bill absolutely hated it! So he is responsible for the 1 star, I didn't think it was that bad, hence the 2.
Lords of Dogtown - 3 stars
Lords of Dogtown was a very entertaining movie. I tend to like movies based on true stories so I was totally engrossed by the characters. It peaked our interest so much we are adding the Dogtown and Z-Boys documentary to our Netflix queue!
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy - 1 star vs 3 stars
Anchorman is the first movie Bill and I don't agree on (since we started our reviews). For some odd reason he actually enjoyed this movie. I found it retarded, disjointed, and not entertaining in the least bit. The only person in the movie that made me laugh was Steve Carell. In my opinion it's not even worth watching if it's on TV.
The Third Man - 2 stars
I rented this 1949 classic on Netflix hearing such great things about it. I'm not sure what's wrong with me, but in my opinion The Third Man just doesn't live up to it's reputation. I found it mildly entertaining in the beginning but within the first 1/2 hour I new exactly what was going to happen. I thought it was way to straight forward and predictable. That's why I'm shocked to see the high rating it was given on rotten tomatoes. Am I missing something? There were some really neat scenes but overall I think the plot left something to be desired.
Primer - 3 stars
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Primer, but it may have been the most confusing movie I've ever seen. It's a movie about time travel and you know as well as I do how that plays with your mind. The beginning was a little hard to understand and the dialogue was confusing, but once the plot thickened and you weren't sure what timeframe you were in it was quite fascinating. You may want to watch this one a few times to actually get it. To give you an idea of how crazy the plot his check out this timeline of the plot and characters (this may only be interesting to those who have seen the movie).
Cinderella Man - 4 stars
Cinderella Man was a wonderful film! Great story, superb acting and inspirational. We liked it so much it prompted us to research the real James J. Braddock, the main character of the film, when we got home. Bill also found this great article discussing how factual the movie is which gave us some more insight into the life of the real boxer. Overall Highly recommended by the Noone's, a must see!
